Water systems are very complex, as well as being very important. Your learners will locate the world's water systems, discuss watersheds, water tables, and atmospheric effects of water bodies, plus experiment with why glaciers are changing and look at how municipal water systems work. After tracking their personal water consumption, your learners will create a plan to change and see how scientists and innovators are helping to improve the global water systems. These 11 sections also include delving into media pieces for sensationalism and using that knowledge to bring attention to a local water issue.

This unit includes sections on: The Real Water Cycle; Water Map; Glaciers and Polar Ice Caps; Water Table; How Water Bodies Impact Atmospheric Conditions; Personal Water Consumption: Municipal Water Systems; Water in the Media; Science Discovery and Technology Innovations: Testing Water; and a Local Water Issues.

Required Materials

Gr 8 Water systems: blank paper, ability to print, blank unlabelled map of world (printed off internet), ice cubes, some of the following: fan, water, lamp, sand, plastic clear containers (recycling works - like old water bottles, need to be able to make small holes in them so good to have nails and hammer), sand, gravel, cups, some of the following: twigs, leaves, seeds, ketchup, soy sauce, mustard (other kitchen sauces) - to create dirty water, some of the following: funnels, fabric, cardboard, sand, gravel, yard, wire, coffee filters, etc. - pH strips, conductivity meter (optional), salt, Chlorine test strips, water types (tap, rain, bottled, filtered, stream, etc)
